Position Description:

REQUIRES MINIMUM OF AN ACTIVE SECRET CLEARANCE

Part of a team supporting the operations and maintenance of large scale and world-wide Enterprise IT environment covering application hosting and support, enterprise services, and infrastructure services. This candidate will serve as a monitoring engineer for the Department of State.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the design and implementation of a monitoring solution across a range of multiple physical and logical sub-networks using NetIQs AppManager and other tools.
  • Assist with the design and implementation of NetIQs Operations Center to allow data from multiple-data sources to feed into a single monitoring dashboard.
  • Keep up-to-date on latest monitoring technologies, and make suggestions on new tools that provide more capabilities and efficiency, or that fill gaps in current monitoring structure.
  • Monitor and administer Linux and Windows servers.
  • Monitor network devices, storage devices and virtual infrastructure.
  • Monitor database and application servers using various monitoring tools.
  • Perform analysis and make recommendation on design that meets industry best practice for monitoring.
  • Work with System Transition engineers and software developers to identify the best thresholds for in-house developed applications and customized off-the-shelf products.
  • Automation of various IT processes related to monitoring and alerting.
  • Development of knowledge and skills in network and system administration, particularly with regard to Department of State architecture and platforms.
  • Provide reports and metrics as ad-hoc requests or deliverables.
  • Work with outside teams to establish to monitoring policies or integrate new monitoring tools and data.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements/Qualifications:

  • At least 5-8 years of experience as monitoring engineer
  • Extensive Knowledge of NetIQ AppManager QDB Repositories, AppManager Management Servers, AppManager Control Center, AppManager Performance Profiler, AppManager Analysis Center, and/or Splunk.
  • Engineering experience within a large-scale and complex type monitoring environment.
  • Knowledge of Syslog, TCP/IP; SNMP Traps; and other protocols.
  • Experience in setting up monitoring profiles, polling policies and thresholds.
  • Scripting Experience (VBScript, PowerShelll, JavaScript, PERL, and/or UNIX Shell Scripting).
  • Experience working with both Windows and Red Hat and an understanding of VMware or equivalent virtualization technology.
  • Ability to help modernize the current monitoring posture; make recommendations on areas of improvements, and assist to increase automation and efficiency.

Education and Certifications

  • BS/BA in related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • ITIL v3 Foundations Certification

Experience Desired:

  • 5+ years as a monitoring engineer
  • 10+ years of experience in enterprise systems monitoring, including operations center or service desk.
  • 5+ years supporting a Federal data center environment.
  • 5+ years of experience working with NetIQ, Splunk, or similar monitoring tool.
  • Technical experience with systems networking, databases, Web development, and user support.

Experience with NetIQs Operations Center and/or PlateSpin is a plus
