Job description
Radionuclides are administered to in- and outpatients by the Nuclear Medicine Technologist who follows the radionuclide through the patient's body using detector equipment. Problematic areas will collect either more or less radiopharmaceuticals than normal parts of the body. Images are created by using equipment that portrays the dispersion of the radionuclide throughout the body. Nuclear medicine technologists prepare the patient for the procedure by explaining the process to them, positioning them for the scan, and administering the radionuclide at the direction of the Radiologist either orally or intravenously. They then use a "scanner," or gamma scintillation camera, to visualize images created by concentration of the radionuclide areas of interest in the patient's body. Images w/be made available to the Radiologist for interpretation. Nuclear Medicine Technologists follow safety protocols when working with Radionuclides to limit the patient's and technologist's exposure to unnecessary radiation. Accurate records are kept by the Nuclear Medicine Technologists regarding the type, amount, and application of the Radionuclides administered. The work can be physically demanding as technologists must move and position disabled clients and stand on their feet for much of the day.Required Education/Experience/Specialized Skills: Good patient relationship skills, attention to details, ability to operate equipment, and a team player attitude are essential skills for nuclear medicine technologists to develop.Two [2] to three [3] years nuclear medicine imaging experience in either the in- or outpatient setting. Must be a self starter, exercise initiative and make decisions in the absence of the Imaging Services supervisor or manager.
