POSITION SUMMARY:

The Registered Nurse is responsible for providing direct clinical nursing services to Health Center patients. Daily professional direction is given by the clinician (s) at the site of assignment. The Registered Nurse reports to the Director of Staff Development & Nursing Administration to facilitate the provision of quality nursing functions and is under the general direction of the clinic Manager/Coordinator regarding administrative responsibilities.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Licensed in the State of California as a Registered Nurse
IV certification preferred
Preference for individuals with the ability to communicate in Spanish and English; written and verbal
Valid California Driver's License, proof of auto insurance, and personal transportation
Current certification in basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation

SPECIFIC DUTIES:
Perform triage patient calls and walk-in patients as appropriate. Document triage form in accordance with established protocol
Perform venipuncture as needed; perform intravenous fluid therapy as directed by clinician
Performance of immunizations and laboratory screening procedures including performance of intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular injections as directed by clinicians
Prepare examination rooms, immunization trays, and instruments as required
Prepare patients for examinations including vital signs
Performance of vision and hearing screening as required
Perform electrocardiograms as needed
Assist in maintaining efficient patient flow and interpret as needed
Sees patients scheduled for nursing visits, i.e., wound checks, burns, skin test readings, dressing changes, cast checks, and follow-up injections
Document patient’s medical record as it relates to specific patient needs, utilizing the clinic protocol as standard
Assist clinicians as required
Identifies physical, emotional, social, cultural, and spiritual needs of patients
Assist in the training, orientation and skill check-off of new staff in conjunction with the Clinic Manager or Director of Nursing Services as required
Provide technical assistance for medical assistant, lab and reception staff as required
Assist in maintaining supplies in cabinets and drawers in a neat and orderly fashion. Clean and sterilize supplies as directed. Prepare and stock examination rooms for use
Monitor expiration dates on drug and autoclave supplies
Complete prescription labels as required
Monitor equipment for proper function and report any suspect equipment to the Clinic Manager
Perform individual patient education in conjunction with and as directed by the clinical staff
Maintains compliance with blood borne pathogens, OSHA, etc., and clinic policies and procedures
Participate in outreach activities as required
Participate in clinic staff meetings
Maintain viability of vaccines and monitor vaccine refrigerator
Complete records of reportable diseases and monthly reports as required
Performs other duties as required

Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to give and evaluate patient care
Knowledge of organizational policies, regulations and procedures to administer patient care
Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care
Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment
Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods and techniques of professional nursing to provide on-going patient care
Skill in identifying problems and recommending solutions
Skill in preparing and maintaining records, writing reports and responding to correspondence
Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public
Ability to maintain quality control standards
Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures
Ability to communicate clearly

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
