This Payroll Supervisor will perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over the payroll staff. This is a supervisory-level position requiring an individual who is capable of exercising good judgment and who possesses superior interpersonal skills. This payroll supervisor provides skilled assistance and support to the payroll and human resources departments in all phases of payroll and personnel relations. This supervisor will oversee all Schuff Steel with centralized in-house full cycle payroll processing on a weekly pay frequency that includes all tax filings; both Federal and State, annual year-end and W2 processing. This supervisor will be actively involved with the discovery and implementation of new computer software for finance and automated time and attendance systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Supervises PR specialists, PR Processors, PR Clerks and PR Data Entry/Filing Clerks.
  • Coordinates and supervises all payroll work activities. Monitors status of work in progress, inspects completed workand resolves problem situations.
  •  Enforces established payroll related policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Oversees payroll related processing between the payroll area, operating departments, human resources and the information systems department.
  • Reviews payroll procedures utilized by Schuff Steel and works effectively with management to improve existing policies. Makes suggestions for change and/or improvements, implements changes when necessary.
  • Ensures timely reporting and payment of the employers and employee's withholding taxes and miscellaneous withholdings to appropriate agencies.
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
  • Assists and organizes preparation for all types of internal and external audits. During the audit process provides documents, reports and other payroll related items upon request including answering questions and implementing procedural changes recommended by auditors.
  • Performs research, troubleshooting and prepares reports.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent. Bachelor's Degree highly preferred.  Minimum of 3 to 4 years of payroll supervisory experience required with multi-states.  Minimum of 8 years of payroll processing experience; Certification through APA highly preferred. 

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

Strong time management and business acumen required. Ability to multi-task and prioritize workloads and schedules efficiently. Must be a team player and work effectively with all types of diverse personalities. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.  Strong analytical and critical thinking skills; Strong organizational and communication skills; Thorough knowledge of Payroll Practices and Procedures as they relate to federal and state requirements; Thorough knowledge of payroll cycles and reconciliation; Thorough knowledge of IRS rules and regulations as they pertain to Employer Requirements for withholdings; Thorough knowledge of Payroll rules and laws as they pertain to garnishments, levies, fines, and fees at the federal, state, and local levels.  Knowledge of ADP and financial accounting software systems; Thorough understanding of In-house and outsourced payroll management.  Thorough knowledge of Time Keeping Systems (Kronos)

EQUIPMENT USED Various office equipment is used such as personal computer, scanner, copier and fax.  Must have knowledge and experience with MS Office 2007; MS Outlook, MS Word, and MS Excel; Payroll & Accounting financial software; MS Dynamics AX preferred; Kronos Time Keeping platform. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS Work is generally performed in a climate controlled office area.  Position may require minimal travel.  Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time throughout an 8-10 hour day.
