Position Summary

The Senior R&D Technician is responsible for managing quick turn medical device OEM projects, prototyping catheters and subassemblies, developing processes for producing custom designed catheters to acceptable yield and throughput metrics, qualifying and validating these processes and ramping up to production levels before transferring process ownership to production.  The technician will also be responsible for improving existing production processes.

Candidate must be able to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced, customer-centric environment; should enjoy communicating with customers, vendors, and internal departments; and be passionate about our goal of consistent on-time delivery of high-quality products. 

This position is ideally suited for Technicians with a broad range of catheter development experiences, who like to roll up their sleeves and spend time on the production floor.  Typical projects last a few weeks, not months, so the position is a good fit for technicians who enjoy autonomy and see quick results from their efforts.

 

Principal Responsibilities

•    Work with engineers to clarify or resolve problems, and develop designs.

•    Oversee assemblers/operators during development, provide instruction and expertise as needed to resolve issues with technique.

•    Effectively communicate with large teams including Engineering Manager, Engineers, and Operators.

•    Support plan and manage product development efforts including interacting with customers, communicating with vendors and suppliers, writing procedures, recording and analyzing data, building products and training others to build product.

•    Develop, document and build prototype products, fixtures and tooling as directed by engineers; and develop processes to produce catheters and subassemblies according to customer design, performance, and quality specifications; on time and on budget.

•    Prepare component, subassembly or finished product drawings and documents.

•    Initiate and document development assembly processes for use in production work instructions.

•    Perform and coordinate production and testing of development projects as directed by engineers.

•    Support product transfer from R&D to pilot production to full production through training and process development. 

•    Maintain lab notebook practices in accordance with company quality procedures.

•    Maintain lab supplies and cleanliness.

•    Hands-on catheter design, development, and assembly; Including but not limited to: braiding, reflow, coiling, bonding, tipping, skiving, inspection or other processes.

•    Track project costs, material lead times, scrap rates, and product delivery schedules.

•    Develop bills of materials and assembly method, update SAP paperwork.

•    Project management: material management, operator management, prototype and yield management, etc.

•    Writing, monitoring and reviewing test protocols.

•    Design for manufacturability and assembly.

•    Hands-on process design, development, validation, and transfer experience.

•    Implement cost reductions by working closely with production to reduce scrap and waste, and improve efficiencies.

 

Education / Experience Requirements

•    High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution, preferred. 

•    Associate's degree in material science, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality Engineering or related field, preferred.

•    A minimum of 5 years of regulated medical device R&D Technician experience, or equivalent, required.

•    A minimum of 3 years of designing, developing and assembling catheters or catheter sub-assemblies experience, preferred.

 

Specialized Skills / Other Requirements

•    Proficient in MS Office products.

•    Experience in SAP or similar MRP/ERP system preferred.

•    Excellent Oral and Written communication skills.

•    Familiarity with statistical process control and metrology team.

•    Working knowledge of lean manufacturing processes related to medical device manufacturing.

•    Self-starter, ability to prioritize work and work independently.

•    Project management skills.

•    Experience with 3D modeling a plus.

•    Knowledge of reinforced catheters is highly preferred.

•    May be required to work overtime on weekends, 1st or 2nd shift.  Travel to customers, vendors or alternate manufacturing locations on occasion.

Physical Requirements:

•    Frequently required to stand, walk, sit and use small tools.

•    Capable of using equipment such as a microscope, soldering iron, mechanical and electrical assembly tooling and fixtures, adhesive dispenser, tweezers, crimpers, cutters and hand tools.

•    Some lifting up to 20 pounds.
